A Masonic Thought for Each Day of the Year, July 19th
Man must be tall of soul as well as broad, if he is to see life in the large, much less "see it steadily and see it whole," as the wise ones enjoin us to do. Altitude of mind gives us new proportions and perspectives, and shows us that many times things of which men are wont to make much are insignificant; and that other things, like a cup of cold water offered to a brother are of eternal moment. It is when we add this…

Open the Bible where you will, and the first impression is that of vastness. It has in it the curve of the earth and the arch of the sky. Great and wide like the world, it is rooted in the abyss of creation and rises into the blue mysteries of heaven. There are, continents of truth, seas of mystery, rivers flowing from invisible springs, valleys rich with harvest, marshes of melancholy, depths sombre and sunless, and mo…

THE TROWEL
Now each, man builds a Temple by his single strength alone,
And whatsoe'er its worthiness, that Temple is his own,
Of chaste and gleaming marble or of ugly mud and clay,
Each Temple must its builder's self, his secret soul, display.
The world beholds and reasons. "Lo, this builder's house is fair;
All honor to the Craftsman who has set such beauty there;…

No man is an island entire of itself.
Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were;
Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved
in mankind;
And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

BEST WISHES
May the cause of Brotherhood
'Round the World be understood;
And peace espoused in every land,
By one and all on every hand.
May the joys of friendships be renewed,
Greed, and lust, and avarice subdued.
May the good which can be done,
Touch the lives of everyone.
May the gifts which we possess,
Be deployed for happiness.

All men feel, at times, an oppressive sense of human insignificance. Millions of men lived here upon this earth before us, and have vanished. We do not know their names. Like us, they were pilgrims and had to pass on. Soon we must follow along the same beaten path into the common oblivion, and our footsteps will be trodden out by the oncoming multitudes. It is in the midst of meditations such as these that the dear old…

The one thing that man cannot escape in life is inward struggle. Whether it is the lonely man in the wilderness who wrestles with the angel through the long night until the day breaks; or the Prince of men who hears the enemy tell him that he should use his powers to satisfy his own personal needs; or the man of great power or small business, or industry, or professional life who faces the question of corrupting his po…

The happiest people are those who think the most interesting thoughts. Interesting thoughts can only live in cultivated minds. Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development who love good music, good books, good pictures, good plays at the theatre, good company, good conversation—what are they? They are the happiest people in the world; and they are not only happy in themselves, they are the cause of…

BROTHER
Be ready with a friendly greeting,
Reserve night when we hold meetings,
Obey the Master's pleas and wishes,
Take time to help out with the dishes,
Help widows, orphans, with quickness,
Ease, too, the lot of those with sickness
Remember to love one another—
—and you'll deserve the name of

KNIFE AND FORK DEGREE
I do not attend the meetings
for I've not the time to spare.
But every time they have a feast
You'll surely find me there.
I cannot help with the degrees
for I do not know the work.
But lean applaud the speaker
and handle the knife and fork.

It seems like Greek to me.

On meeting nights some always show
While there are those who never go.

What matters it, your faith or mine;
Both center at the goal divine
Of Love's eternal brotherhood.

But what is that to you and me?
Creeds are but branches of a tree,
The root of love lives on and on.

To live well we must have a faith fit to live by, a self fit to live with, and a work fit to live for—something to which we can give ourselves and thus get ourselves off our hands. I wish somehow we could have fraternity among nations, as it is taught in America among men. I do not mean to employ sign, grip and password, which affords an appealing mystery to our relationship, but the insistent demands for just dealings, the respect for rights of others and the ideals of brotherhood recited in the Golden Rule, and the righteous fellow-relationship which every man knows his God approves. The only lightless dark is the night of darkness in ignorance and insensibility.

But let us understand what in it is fundamental and eternal, and what is mere interpretation to make it of service to the past. When an American says he loves his country, he means not only that he loves the New England hills, the prairies glistening in the sun, or the wide rising plains, the mountains, and the seas. He means that he loves an inner air, an inner light in which freedom lives and in which a man can draw the breath of self respect.

Watching an old movie the other day reminded me of a discussion I had a while back with someone who intimated that I did not take my duties – or Masonry, for that matter – seriously. Ah, that's the reason a bird can sing—
