Blue Lightning Program...

What do you think of the Masonic Blue Lightning One Day Program?
Some say...

....it's great because it stops candidates from losing interest. Allowing them to become Master Masons sooner will let them get involved sooner.

Others say...
....if it come too easy they will be lost as easily...Let members appreciate and learn from their time as a EA or FC then when they're MM's they will have the knowledge needed to live up to the obligation.

I my home lodge (Etiwan #95 Mt. Pleasant SC ) We Follow the three month deal from EA to MM .
This gives the candidate time to learn and, understand the degrees. If you did it all in one day I wonder how much would the candidate learn or, retain.

in the philippines some would take years before they could be balloted, sometimes it all depends on the merits of the petitoner. It is one way of knowing wether or not the petioner has no ulterior motive in joining masonry...

In my opinion the time spent learning the degree is time well spent. The officers in the lodge would be the only people that no the work if this time was not spent learning by the candidates.
The stewards teach the work to the new guy,s in our lodge and, this helps them become more proficient in there work at the same time.

The one day be a Mason is like the one day be a doctor,it's hard enuff to deal with 2 in and out! It still all boills down to 10%.No matter how many you bring in only 10% will do more then were the ring,I have a good Brother in a nother Lodge we were both raised about the sam time.He was one day and I the EA,FA,MM.I'm in Lodge all the time both his and mine.He is in every now and then, and I have had to sit in his chair more the once over the past 2 years.I know the need to make better men,but do we need this factory line to do it and is it realy working ?? Ya the numbers go up but the chair's go empty and in need of thoes good men to fill.I would like to go to a one day class to see and to ask,did you get it all or are ther gaps.It must be a cram test at the LOI that day,and or we doing thers new Brother right by all of the flash card way to being a mason??This type of sword cuts bouth ways and I for one do not like the feel of that.Lets try to slow up the drive up McMason way of bring in the New Brothers,or keep on and ask do we want frys with that degree!!!! If knowledge is truly power then lets enpower or candidates by giveing them not the ramjet way but the right way to tne craft.May be we should ask the new candidates if thay have a friend,a pal or even a brother who like to join in with them when thay go in.Make it more of a true begining fo that person ask himif he knows off other who like to make the trip with him.

I have never experienced the one day thing so bare with me here please.
With the one day thing do the candidates stand proficiency on each degree ? How do they go through the degree work inside the lodge ?What part do the officers in the lodge do?Do they receive the charges and, lectures?
degree work inside the blue lodge is in my opinion the most important function of the blue lodge . Do the officers in these lodges that do this just open and, close the lodge ?

While many feel that there are a couple valid situations to do a one day class--for the most part--the general concensus is that the degrees of masonry have a much deeper meaning and provide a much more meaningful experience DURING the journey from one degree to the next --the anticipation, the studying for proficiency, even savoring the wait for the next degree--etc, etc ----much more than a few hour experience can give---the one day class with multiple candidates also usually is just an audience of guys watching it happen to one candidiate--so all of the spectators have no personal inttmate experience at all--like watching it on TV--you know you may only get your 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree once---and so the debate continues---heatedly argued for years- IF you are active and participate later on,,then you hopefully learn the beauty of masonry as applied to others that follow you,, but many feel the one day class is not an aid to creating a strong commitment to the craft--and the worst thing that can happen is have brother mishandled, unguided, and drop out---the exceptions most, but not all agree to, is a man leaving to serve his country in harms way or in the case of a serious illness--hope this helps

Brother John has made several valid points and, I agree with him 100%.
The constitution of the grand lodge of SC states clearly that the time between degrees must be no Les than 28 days, this allows time for the candidate to learn the degree and, then stand proficiency on that degree.
I enjoyed that time spent learning the degree work and, going through the degrees. My brothers and, the officers in my lodge worked hard to put on the degrees and, I walked away with a understanding of what I had been through and, a better understanding of what masonry is and, where masonry came from.
I don't see how a man can become a mason and, understand what masonry is with out going through the degrees. How do you no if the pore blind candidate came of his own free will and, is dully and, truly prepared, with out him going through the degrees.?
