Masonic Week 2008

Brethren,

Is there anyone here who intends to travel to Alexandria in February for Masonic Week (Wed. Feb 6 - Sat. Feb. 9)? It was normally held at the Hotel Washington previously, but this is the first year it is moved to the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel.

Bro. Ken Gibala, Chmn of the Reservations Cmte of Benjamin B. French #15, GLDC, says:

"The Wednesday evening will begin with dinner at 6:30... there is no charge though reservations will be required to guarantee sufficient food is available. The evening will be a program presentation by our Sovereign Grand Commander on his thoughts on the future of Freemasonry. Since the SGC is our newest lodge member and his presentation will satisfy our requirement that new members present a paper we will be proud to receive the remarks of this very special brother. Following will be our traditional Q&A period to the presenter and following that our WM will present our new brother his membership card for our humble lodge. As usual the lodge will be reduced to refreshment so non masons attending will be welcome.

"I have again been asked to be a reservations manager so if there is any interest feel free to add you name to the reservations list.

"We are happy to learn that Bro. John Belton, PM MPS will be attending and with him Bro. Trevor Stewart of Quatuor Coranati Lodge. Now if our esteemed brother Wallace McLeod, Executive Secretary PSOC can attend we should have three members present from the QC lodge.

"I'm sorry this notice may seem a tad late but better late than not at all.

"Again, our Worshipful Master will graciously welcome all who attend.

"Regarding Prince Hall visitors: Our lodge probably already recognizes more PHA lodges than any other mainstream lodge in North America.. and our lodge receives as visitors those Prince Hall brethren not yet recognized as visitors for our dinners and the open program portion of the lodge meeting. So all are welcome...."

Bro. Gibala can be reached at jkg4902@hotmail.com for reservations.

On Thursday, the Lodge of Nine Muses #1776 and Sojourner-Kilwinning Lodge #1798 has often held a function, jointly or separately, but it is not yet clear whether either will do so this year.

On Friday morning at 11:00 a.m., the Society of Blue Friars will meet, and hear a presentation from the Friar-elect on whatever publication he has authored.

This is followed at noon with an open, a la carte luncheon held for the members of the SOC.ORG.FREEMASONRY newsgroup and MASONIC LIGHT e-mail listserv members to meet and greet. This is always an enjoyable hour or so and I try never to miss it. Usually held at Old Ebbitt Grill in D.C., plans for this year will be announced. Janet Wintermute, of the A.·. A.·. P.·. R.·. M.·. M.·., hosts this luncheon. There are no tests of recognition or regularity to eat. [smiling]

On Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., there is the Philalethes Society's Annual Feast & Forum, a lovely white-linen dinner which features the annual report of the Board of Directors and a presentation by a speaker - this year, it is the M.·. W.·. Frank Haas, of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia. I for one am most interested in hearing from him.

After the PSOC Forum, we have generally always retired to the PSOC Hospitality Suite for cigars and libations, and it is my sincere hope that we will do the same this time as well.

This is all in addition to the ongoing AMD schedule of events. These are parallel functions about which you can read here:

I hope to see you there.

WFR,

If I had grinned any wider, I'd have had a flip-top head! It was so, so good to meet and greet, to put faces with names, and to spend some time together. More of the same for the next three days!

Brethren All,

Each year, Masons from all over the U.S., Canada, and other countries around the world come to the Washington, D.C. area to visit Masonic Orders some of which many Masons have never heard, and to visit local Lodges in the D.C. area. Here are a few photos, taken with my phone's camera, of this year's Masonic Week gathering, which was held in Alexandria, VA. Distance shots are, of course, not very well defined, but the few such shots that were taken still give some sense of presence, so please bear with them; the photos aren't all like that. Egregiously low resolutions were not included.

Placing faces with names is often a good thing. I hope you enjoy these, and find them interesting. If you have never been to Masonic Week, these photos may play a small part in helping you to decide to come visit. The album you're looking for is called, naturally, Masonic Week 2008. Clicking on each thumbnail will let you see the captions with the photos. The T-Mobile site is going to ask you for an access code. The access code is "masonic" (without the quotation marks, of course). The album is relatively small, and is at:

http://tinyurl.com/3bmohe

Also, on my other photo website at www.flickr.com/photos/magus_of_luxor you can find a somewhat larger album called Memoirs of a Traveler, if you haven't already seen it, in which are some photos of Masonic meet-n-greets that I've co-hosted in the NYC area, and past Masonic Week gatherings in D.C., when we were still at the historic Hotel Washington (her name be praised in reverent, hushed tones, augmented by much genuflection and followed by a moment of solemn silence...)

As you look at the pics, if you choose the slideshow option then you will note that when you pass your mouse over the photo an encircled "i" pops up, indicating that there is captioned information about the photo ; click that to see the caption about the photo you're looking at. If you find that you cannot get to the album and need access assistance, ping me back-channel and I'll square it away.

Bro. Steve, although we had the great pleasure of meeting at last at Benjamin B. French #15 to hear the talk by Bro. Seale, I realized tonight that I have not one photo of you for my album. My apologies, Brother!

Your Brother,
